Last Thursday, the window to register to apply for a new TLD closed. However, applications for new TLDs continue until April 12th. ICANN stated they wanted to release the list of applications for generic top-level domains two weeks after the application window closed (April 12th).
Today, ICANN announced they have targeted the date of April 30th to release the list of TLDs which were applied for. ICANN has included the caveat that should there be an overwhelming number of applicants, the list could be postponed.
What does this mean?
- This means the soonest we will see a list of possible TLDs that is more the educated speculation will be no earlier than April 30th.
What we still don’t know?
- What an “overwhelming number of applications” is? This number could be anything. It could be more than one thousand or it could be between 500 and 1000.
- If there is an overwhelming number, when the estimated date to release the list would be.
